Museum Island

with one comment

Museum Island.

It’s a small island in the heart of the Berlin (yes it is completed surrounded by water and linked only through bridges) and it has 5 awesome museums on the island.

They are the Bodes Museum, Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Pergamon Musuem and the Altes National Gallerie.

I’ve got a Museum pass that granted me unlimited access (woohoo!) for three days (you mentioned that there are 70 plus museums in Berlin and I get access to about 60 of them?) which really means you have to cherry pick the best Museums if you want to see the best of Berlin.

I decided to commit myself to at least seeing the five Museums on the only Museum Island in the world. In doing so, rate the museums. If you’re on a tight schedule in Berlin, you can come to the island and visit the most important one.

But really, everyone knows what the best Museum in Berlin is.

So I’ll start with the least of 5 on Museuminsel.

5.

Altes Museum

“That’s it?”

This museum has like bits of everything, paintings, sculptures etc. But it does not have like 1 thing that makes it a must see. It has the most impressive exterior, its steps and 2 statues that flank the entrance.

Its most interesting exhibit, is its eroticism in ancient times exhibit.

(Warning, pictures below are NSFW)

I wonder who was the model for these lamps….

Bikes, Sea and Beer

with one comment

I am convinced. Of the fact that bike tours are the one of the better ways to see a city.

Having a good guide notwithstanding, to feel the wind on your face, embracing the city and it’s scenery and riding past the important areas in a day’s time, it does condense the essence of a city for a busy traveller who just want to capture the sights in a short amount of time. You can’t do this in all cities evidently. But if circumstances permit. Do try it.

So here’s my bike Sirius Black.

Consistent with my tour theme, I also decided that the best way to see the Berlin nightlife was through a pub tour.

The idea was to visit 4 pubs and 1 club – the Matrix was the climax of the tour.

Somehow, other than the first 2 pubs, the subsequent 2 were completely empty and it seemed the pub tour attendees were the only customers in the pub. There was this cool Australian dude (Nick) who treated me to a shot of Jagermeister.

The night ended with curry wurst from Curry 61 and topped off with black mamba, the spiciest chili! Not as spicy as I imagined.

Praise God!

After a 4 hour plus train ride, I’ve finally reached Berlin. The city oft mentioned during my European history lessons.

The Berlin Hauptbannhoff is the largest and most majestic train terminal I’ve seen so far.

I soon got my bearings and ticket from the tourist info center and set off to find my tavern for the night.

It is slightly to the south of the city center and it is massive.

The three little pigs hostel. At least they understand English for them to have such a name for their place.

The hostel appears to have been previously a convent from the 19th Century and it has this huge ass hall that made me felt like some Asian recruit on his first day in Hoggswarts.

And the 8 room dorm was the biggest hostel room I’ve been in. No double bunk beds. They have like 8 of these dorms on each floor and they have like 5 floors worth.

I soon settled in and made my way to the closest attraction that was still open. Legoland!

Legoland had like 8 zones and you were supposed to stamp your visitor card with a stamp from each zone. They have like Dragon Zone, Pirates Zone, Indiana Zone etc.

In Indiana Jones Land, you answer questions about animals and press buttons to make lights and sounds!

In Dragonland, you take a ride and see Lego knights and a large size dragon!

Of course, everything is made out of Lego in Legoland! I captained a Lego pirate ship and watched a Lego 4D movie in German.

You can even build your own Lego car and test if they come apart or build your own Lego building and see if earthquakes destroy. Yes, they have quake machines that tests the structural integrity of your building. Earthquakes = awesome!

If I was still a kid that is…

For dinner, I set out to find the famous Curry Wurst 36 in Berlin.

So there’s all these people queuing up and they stand around the metal tables and enjoy all these hot Currywurst with beer.

2 crispy and juicy German sausages lathered with crunchy fries and smothered in luxurious mayonnaise and curry sauce, topped off with curry powder.

Weekly Roundup

Originally, the idea behind the blog was to update it everyday for my family and friends.

But when the iphone failed me, I soon realised I needed an alternative plan.

Regardless, here’s what happened.

Day Zero – 5 breakfasts consumed over a 16 hour period. This is what happens when you fly red-eye.

Day One – Ok. Maybe I had underestimated how cold the weather were and sleeping in the streets could kill you. At least everyone speaks English here.

Day Two – Went to Natural History Museum – which was free and came with dinosaur bones.

Day Three – Set off for Brussels through the Channel Tunnel on the bullet train.

Day Four – Saw the most beautiful night scene ever. Brussels Grand Square in the night.

Day Five – Went to Brugges

Day Six – Went to Brugges

Day Seven – Back to Brussels

And 7 days has passed. I’m stuck in a dingy cyber cafe across the road from my hostel trying to write on a fritted up keyboard that has a french alphabet set-up; not unlike the pathetic writer that I am.

No kidding; here’s a sample of the layout.

Long story short. A, Q and W played musical chairs with one another. You need shift or caps lock to even get the full stop.

Day 1

leave a comment »

The wanderer opened his eyes and weakly stared  into  familiar darkness.  It was warm. Yet different.

He began to feel senses coming back into his body. The warmth spreading throughout and the light slowly peeking through  to his consicousness.

I’m still alive. He thought. The first night had been cold. But it seemed to have turned warmer.  The covers provided more comfort and protection than he imagined.  He slowly    sat up and embraced the light of the foreign land.

Outside the window,  he can see the sparse houses and the trees. The forests. It is different.  He remembers the beginning. Breathing in,

At the beginning,

Where does it come from, this quest? This need to solve life’s mysteries when the simplest of questions can never be answered? Why are we here? What is the soul? Why do we dream? Perhaps we’d be better off not looking at all. Not delving, not yearning. But that’s not human nature. Not the human heart. That is not why we are here. Yet still we struggle to make a difference, to change the world, to dream of hope, never knowing for certain who we will meet along the way. Who among the world of strangers will hold our hand, touch our hearts, and share the pain and triumph?
